What do the welder Paul, the hairdresser Christian and the senior teacher Fritz have in common? They all play chess in a club, week after week, month after month, year after year. Together with many others from every conceivable profession, from chimney sweeps to ophthalmologists, from students to pensioners.
Only a few have stood out through special achievements, whether they have become city champions or even state champions, published a book or held public office. But all of them together shape life in the club, have their good and bad sides, cultivate their quirks and are close friends and rivals in their love of chess.
The author Jürgen Nickel, a leading member of the traditional Flensburg Chess Club of 1876 since 1962, has spent many years with them at the board and on the road at tournaments and has experienced many amusing or thought-provoking stories with them, which he has collected over the last 30 years. Among the 27 stories in total, there are also four that are based on research and go back further into the history of the club.
Readers of the annual chess calendar have long known and appreciated Jürgen Nickel's special talent for storytelling. It is a kind of poetry of everyday life with which he makes the seemingly insignificant little things in life shine as if through a magnifying glass. Humor is never lacking.
