The most important games of the world chess champions.

Volume 4: Vasily Smyslov and Mikhail Tal

Vasily Smyslov (1957 to 1958) – In contrast to Botvinnik, Vasily Smyslov's positional chess style is light and graceful. Born in Moscow in 1921, he never embraced communism, but retained a religiosity that anticipated the revival of Russian Orthodoxy. As a singer who almost made it into the Bolshoi Opera, he knows what he is talking about when he says: "The chess artist must search broadly and creatively for new paths." Smyslov lives in Moscow.

Mikhail Tal (1960 to 1961) – Hair-raising combinations, spectacular sacrifices and great humor characterize the career of Mikhail Tal, who was born in Riga in 1936. At the age of 23, he became the youngest world champion in 1960, but immediately lost the title to Botvinnik. Despite poor health, Tal lived his life to the fullest and thrilled chess fans with his unrivaled skills in blitz chess shortly before his death in 1992.
