In this test book, the author has compiled 120 instructive tasks that are presented to the reader/solver in diagram form, each with two or three suggested answers using the multiple choice method. A detailed discussion of all positions follows. In the examples, the author has selected many positions taken from tournament and competition games, in addition to theoretical variations.

The term "opening trap" used here does indeed take up the common term from chess literature, but is not understood in the narrow sense of the word in this book. Rather, it is extended to numerous opening strategy and combinatorial cases in which pitfalls can be avoided, but in which one cannot necessarily speak of a direct trap in the traditional sense of the word.

An introductory chapter on the handling and evaluation of the tests completes the book, which is aimed at advanced amateurs and club players in the lower and middle leagues.
