With the 2.Ne2 variation in the Caro-Kann Defense (1.e4 c6 2.Ne2), sometimes also called the Short Variation, White poses problems for Black as early as the second move. Those who play the Caro-Kann normally like solid structures and calm systems, but with this surprising side variation, White lures Black into unknown territory right from the start!

The move 2.Ne2 seems paradoxical at first glance, as it blocks the view of White's bishop on f1 and prevents the knight from developing on its natural square.
