The Norwegian Defence

After the moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 the Ruy Lopez develops. Black has a wealth of interesting systems that he can use against it. A previously completely ignored possibility is the Norwegian Defense, which develops after the further moves 3...a6 4.Ba4 b5 5.Bb3 Na5!? With this strange-looking move, Black wants to exchange the knight for the strong white-squared bishop. The idea is extravagant and costs time. Black lags behind in development, but often receives very dynamic counterplay. Surprisingly, it is very difficult to prove an advantage for White. The variation is ideal as a surprise weapon, as White will usually be completely unprepared for this rare idea. The game is often concrete and very tactical. The Norwegian Defense is therefore very suitable for players who want to fight for the initiative from the start.
