In his work on the Sicilian Wing Gambit (SFG) 1.e4 c5 2.b4 cxb4 3.a3, Marcus Schmücker addresses a highly interesting system that was long considered adventurous or, at best, an exotic option to avoid the enormous theoretical structure of the Sicilian Defense. The idea behind this gambit is actually quite serious: by eliminating the black c-pawn and aiming for a rapid development of his queenside, White wants to achieve positional compensation for the sacrificed pawn. With the best response 3 ... d5, which the author focuses on, Black can prevent the formation of a strong white pawn center e4/d4. The wild tactical complications that often result from this represent largely new theoretical territory and offer opportunities for a quick, possibly profitable advantage for the player who moves first if he meets an unprepared opponent. It is certainly not to be expected that the SFG will now be increasingly used in GM tournaments. But perhaps the book can help more (club) players to include this previously little-tested but considered healthy anti-Sicilian weapon in their repertoire. Success on the board will ultimately decide whether our branch of the Sicilian giant tree can enjoy growing popularity in the future. The author intends to deal with all alternatives to the "standard move" 3 ... d5 in a later volume.
