In most chess problem books, you are placed in an artificial situation: you know that there is a combination, what the topic is and what the goal is. Not so in this book.
In a practical game, you will sometimes have to work out a combination or abandon a tactical idea and simply dig out a good positional move. You just have to find the right move, whatever it may be. The exercises in this book put the reader in exactly this situation.
John Nunn, a top grandmaster and one of the world's best chess problem solvers, wants to thoroughly test the reader's abilities with 250 selected positions. The aim is to find the best move in each task. These positions are full of spectacular ideas, but the reader must decide for himself whether to go along with them or fall into a trap.
