Tigran Petrosian became the 9th world chess champion in history after defeating defending champion Mikhail Botvinnik in a match in 1963. In 1969, he lost the title to Boris Spassky. But even after losing the world championship title, Petrosian remained one of the best players in the world for a long time and took part in the fight for the world championship several times.
