When Viswanathan Anand appeared on the European chess stage, he had already achieved some success in India, winning the Indian youth championships and, as a teenager, the national adult championships. At just 14 years of age, Anand was called up to the Indian national team for the 1984 Chess Olympiad. In 1987 he became junior world champion, and in 1988 FIDE awarded the 19-year-old the title of grandmaster.

After the reunification of the world championships in 2006, Anand won the 2007 World Championship tournament. In 2008, he successfully defended his title in the World Championship match against Vladimir Kramnik. Anand is the only world champion to have won or defended the title in three different formats: knockout, round-robin and competitive. Anand defended the title again in 2010 (against Topalov) and 2012 (against Gelfand). In 2013, he lost the title in the World Championship match to Magnus Carlsen and was unable to regain it in 2014.

To this day, Anand is one of the absolute best in the world and has triggered a real chess boom in his home country, where he is celebrated as a national hero. Countless young Indians emulate their idol there. Anand's style is defined by a deep understanding of chess, but also by his lightning-fast grasp of tactical motifs. In his younger years, he amazed his opponents with the great speed with which he played his moves. He usually did not use the time limit and was therefore the world's best rapid chess and blitz player for decades.

With this DVD, you can learn, based on the example of one of the best players in chess history and with the explanations of the authors (Yannick Pelletier, Mihail Marin, Karsten Müller and Oliver Reeh), how to play games strategically, put your opponent under constant pressure and win endgames with a clean technique. Using Viswanathan Anand's games, you can also trace the history and development of numerous popular openings and thus gain a much better understanding of their ideas.
