A sharp Slav Vol. 1 in 60 Minutes
1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 dxc4! I think there are a few opening surprises that the average opponent is not prepared for, and taking c4 early in the Slav is one of them! In two 60-minute DVDs I plan to examine the lines after 3.Nc3 dxc4 and the lines after 3.Nf3 dxc4. Black does very well with both lines and both are somewhat unusual and ambitious, in keeping with the trend of modern dynamic play, which allows Black to win directly from the opening if White is not careful. White can end up in a pawn-down position after just a few moves! In the position after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3, 3...dxc4 is disruptive. Black wants to play ...b7-b5 and then often ...b5-b4 and attack the knight on c3. This is the biggest difference between this line and the lines that arise after 3.Nf3 dxc4. Many top players, especially Nakamura, have won a number of games with 3...dxc4 recently. I think we should follow their example!
