Dr. Emanuel Lasker (1868-1941) was world chess champion from 1894 to 1921 - the only one that German chess has produced to date. No other world champion has come anywhere close to his dominance over an incredible 27 years. He wrote numerous books about the game, with his "Textbook of Chess" being one of the best textbooks ever.
The purely didactic content is covered in the following sections:
“The Elementary Theory of Chess”;
“The Doctrine of Openings”;
"The combination";
“The positional game”;
“Examples and Patterns”.
The chapters "The Aesthetic Effects of Chess" and "On Chess Education" round off the masterpiece by illustrating what the author meant by a "holistic approach to chess". And that is, that Lasker was not only an outstanding chess player, but also a man with many interests and a culture who was also very much at home in other areas (such as mathematics and philosophy). Accordingly, it is hardly surprising that Albert Einstein said of Lasker that he was one of the most interesting people he had met in his later years.
