1...c7-c5 as a response to 1.e2-e4 is mentioned as early as 1594 in a book by the Italian Giulio Cesare Polerio (1548-1612), and in the 17th century his compatriot Gioachino Greco (1600-1634) gave it the name "Giuoco Siciliano". At first this defence was rarely used, but over time it attracted more and more attention and its popularity increased significantly, especially since the middle of the 20th century. Nowadays the "Sicilian Defence" is the most frequently played opening against 1.e2-e4 and its popularity is growing continuously because it leads to sharp and complicated positions in which Black gets good dynamic counter-chances.
The "Sicilian Defense" offers a wide range of applications for players of all levels, from amateurs to world-class players. It first deals with all deviations before the basic position after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 etc. is even reached - such as the "Closed Variation", the "Morra Gambit", the "Alapin Variation", the "Grand Prix Attack", the continuation 3.Bb5+ etc. However, since it is unfortunately not possible for reasons of space to present all the main systems of the Sicilian in a single book, the author has decided to introduce you to one of the most popular playing styles today, which almost always leads to an uncompromising fight - namely the Najdorf System .
The well-known chess author, FIDE master Jerzy Konikowski, explains the secrets of the "Sicilian Defense" in this book. Based on 18 theoretical chapters and a final section with 74 extensively commented games, he explains its strategic and tactical refinements and thus offers the reader a complete repertoire against the opening move 1.e2-e4.
