In this compact textbook, the English grandmaster Daniel King explains the '10 golden rules of thumb' of chess. It is intended for beginners who do not know much more than the basic rules and who would like to see a concise but meaningful explanation of the important principles of game management that need to be observed in the three phases of the game: opening, middle game and end game.
The teaching content is presented in an appealing and entertaining way, and since the extremely useful mnemonics are illustrated with examples and exercises, it is guaranteed that the reader will be able to permanently commit them to memory. Accordingly, he should soon feel motivated to successfully try out what he has learned in his own games.
Beginners will certainly appreciate the fact that there are no in-depth theoretical explanations. This book provides a solid but by no means overloaded foundation, which can be easily expanded. If there is interest, it can serve as a springboard for studying more in-depth works of chess literature.
Daniel J. King (born 1963) is a British grandmaster, chess coach and author who was a professional chess player for over 25 years and represented his country at many high-level international events.
