Volume 5. Tigran Petrosian, Boris Spassky
Tigran Petrosian, (1963 to 1969) – As the perfect son of his time, Tigran Petrosian surpassed even Botvinnik in conformism, reserve and caution, the widespread virtues of Soviet people at the time. Born in Tbilisi in 1929 and raised in poverty, he found his way to fame as world champion thanks to talent and prudence, the perfect qualities for his era. Petrosian died in 1984.
Boris Spassky (1969 to 1972) – Born in Leningrad in 1937, Boris Spassky is one of the greatest natural talents in the history of chess. In his prime, he was a master of the glamorous attack. After losing the World Championship to Bobby Fischer, the gentleman with his acting skills fell into disgrace, but he retained his independence and emigrated to France, where he still lives, withdrawn from tournaments.
"Petrosian was the first defender in the truest sense of the word. He showed that almost any position can be held and that chess is a game with an incredible number of resources, not least in defense."
— VLADIMIR KRAMNIK, 14TH WORLD CHESS CHAMPION
“Boris Spassky was the first truly universal chess player.”>
