Volume 3: Mikhail Botvinnik

Mikhail Botvinnik (1948 to 1957, 1958 to 1960, 1961 to 1963) – Born in St. Petersburg in 1911, Mikhail Botvinnik was a staunch communist from his youth, and later managed to get along well with the Stalin regime. As a professor of electrical engineering, he also worked on computer chess, but the patriarch, as everyone called him, became famous as the founder of the legendary Soviet chess school, to which he contributed sophisticated opening knowledge, excellent endgame technique and the art of psychological preparation. Botvinnik died in Moscow in 1995.
