The Spanish Fianchetto

In the fight for acceptable, unbalanced positions after 1.e4 e5, many top players (including World Champion Magnus Carlsen) are increasingly resorting to 3...g6 against the Ruy Lopez (2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5). Black aims for a kingside fianchetto, combining with ...Nf6 or a quick ...f5 depending on White's reaction. The play quickly leaves the normal Ruy Lopez patterns behind and often leads to positions more typical of the King's Indian, especially if White closes the center with d5. Black hopes that 1.e4 players will be less familiar with this territory and the natural attacking opportunities on the kingside that open up for the second player.
