The Armenian top grandmaster Levon Aronian has refreshed an old concept with new game ideas. The starting point of the Aronian Variation in the Spanish Game (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5) is the move 3...Nge7, which was named after Carlo Cozio, an Italian chess master from the 18th century.

The few grandmasters who used 3...Nge7 in the past, however, usually had different plans for it than Aronian and other well-known players in the 21st century: For example, if White plays the classic 4.0-0 with c3 and d4, Black can hope for active piece play with a fianchetto (4...g6, 5...Bg7, etc.). Aronian was not the first to defend himself in this way, but he has impressively demonstrated the potential of this variation. It is a flexible, quick-to-learn universal concept against the Ruy Lopez, which also avoids a number of White options (e.g. the exchange variation 3...a6 4.Bxc6). This DVD discusses all the answers to 3...Nge7 in detail (including 4.0-0, 4.c3, 4.Nc3, 4.d4 and also the move sequence 3...a6 4.Ba4 Nge7). Knowledge can be deepened in over a hundred model games and interactive tests.
