The Najdorf complex

When putting together an opening repertoire, one usually considers two types of variations. Firstly, a solid opening, such as 1...e5 against 1.e4, with plenty of strategic ideas and calm lines. On the other hand, there are of course days when you absolutely need a win with Black and want to unleash a potentially devastating attack on the opponent's position. Najdorf is perfect for precisely such occasions, and it is no coincidence that of all the Sicilian Variations, this was by far the one Garry Kasparov used most often - Najdorf served him well throughout his brilliant career. I have played Najdorf myself with both colours, but even for me there is still something new to discover every day in the endless depths of this opening. Strategy, combinations, attack and defence, sacrifices and magnificent maneuvers - Najdorf is exciting chess par excellence!
