The Alekhine Defense (1.e4 Nf6) is a rare guest in general and especially at high levels. However, during the pandemic, this daring opening has also been used several times, notably by World Champion Magnus Carlsen. Faster time control and perhaps also the unusual atmosphere created by online games have probably contributed to some players choosing a marginal opening from time to time to surprise their opponents.
Playing Alekhine regularly is quite demanding, not to say a bit foolish. Not that this provocative opening is bad, but some ways have emerged where White can more easily get a small advantage out of the opening than against a more classical opening. This also means that the element of surprise is greater, and especially in rapid chess it will be difficult for an underprepared opponent to find the best responses. In this video course we will discuss some fashionable lines that were fairly or completely unexplored 3 or 4 years ago, such as the amazing piece sacrifice in the well-known Voronezh Variation: 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Nd5 3.d4 d6 4.c4 Nb6 5.exd6 cxd6 6.Nc3 g6 7.Be3 Bg7 8.Rc1 0-0 9.b3 d5 10.c5 e5!? In some correspondence games, Alekhine followers have used the now trendy fianchetto approach against 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Nd5 3.d4 d6 4Nf3 and achieved quite decent results. The impression that White cannot easily gain an opening advantage was subsequently confirmed by practice at the board.
