Bauer: The evergreen Philidor

The Philidor Defence has a long history. When it first appeared, at a time when theory (almost) didn't exist, tactically gifted players often succeeded with an early (and dubious) ...f5 advance (3...f5). Another suspect line (3...exd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6) arises when Black moves to d4 and fianchettos his king's bishop. The Antoshin Line (3...exd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Be7 6.Bc4 0-0) is more reliable. Despite its passive appearance, it can lead to lively games, especially when White castles long. But the far more popular Hanham Line (3...Nf6 4.Nc3 Nbd7 5.Bc4 Be7) remains the most solid setup for Black.
This video course covers the different sequences of moves that lead to the main positions of the Philidor Defense, as well as the relevant deviations from White. In the subsequent middle game, where subtle maneuvers take place in a semi-closed position, White will usually not feel comfortable. Let Grandmaster Christian Bauer introduce you to the nuances of this promising opening.
