The memorable Six Masters Tournament in New York in 1927, which was played in four rounds, brought together some of the world's elite of the time: in addition to the reigning world champion JR Capablanca, A. Alekhine, F. Marshall, A. Nimzowitsch, R. Spielmann and M. Vidmar were among the invitees. The tournament was originally intended to determine Capablanca's challenger, but following Alekhine's protest, a corresponding passage in the tournament announcement was deleted, thus weakening its status as a candidates' tournament. Some of the world's top players were not represented, including Emanuel Lasker (due to an ongoing feud with the organizer N. Lederer), Bogoljubow, Rubinstein and Réti. The tournament was won comfortably by Capablanca (undefeated!) ahead of Alekhine, who was able to push the self-proclaimed title contender Nimzowitsch into third place and thus clearly established his position as the only legitimate challenger.

The book on the tournament, first published in 1928, stands out from other contemporary works of this genre in particular due to Alekhine's art of commentary and profound analyses. They have lost little of their fascination to this day. The author also analyzes Capablanca's strengths and weaknesses with insight and openly reveals his own preparations for the World Championship match. Together with Alekhine's tournament book on New York in 1924, this "prelude to the World Championship match in Buenos Aires" is one of the classic standard works among tournament books and belongs in every well-kept chess library.
