The statement by Nigel Short quoted above may be somewhat exaggerated. But there is some truth in it: checkmate ends the game . Material inferiority or certain positional disadvantages no longer play a role when checkmate is on the board.

In order to find the mate, you need good pattern recognition . And in order to practice this, it is important to memorize the most common mate patterns.
