In order to have a chance of making it to the Candidates Tournament in the final stretch, supporters of the respective players organized tournaments to give their favorites a chance of making it to the Candidates Tournament. While what is currently happening in France with Firouzja is at least questionable, the Chennai Grand Master appears in a more positive light. It is the strongest round-robin tournament ever held on Indian soil.
The tournament was registered for the Fide Circuit. This means that players could collect points for the Grand Prix, the winner of which would qualify for the Candidates Tournament. So far, Anish Giri has led this ranking, but with his victory at the Chennai Masters, the young Indian talent Gukesh has overtaken the Dutchman and now has the best chance of a place in the Candidates Tournament.
