The Sicilian Gashimov Variation
It is rare that you can play a variation in the Sicilian after just three moves that is not only healthy and dynamic, but has also remained largely undiscovered so far - although White has scored very well with it in the games in the database so far. But the Gashimov Variation in the Sicilian is one such variation. As in the related Chekhover system (1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Qxd4!?), White wants to lure Black into unfamiliar territory from the start in the Gashimov Variation, which the late, important Azerbaijani grandmaster liked to play. Black has to play precisely and pay attention to many hidden subtleties, but even then he will at best get equalized. In this variation, White aims for a very aggressive setup. He develops the queen early, fianchettos his black-squared bishop and castles long as quickly as possible in order to then become active on the kingside. Of course, Black has a number of options for how he sets up, but the beauty of this variation is that no matter what setup Black is going for, White almost always stays true to his own setup. This makes this opening easy to learn and easy to play.
